Undulating bus station canopy

In Arnhem’s Kronenburg district, public transport is getting a fresh new look, with an undulating bus station canopy serving as an iconic centrepiece. Designed by Ruud-Jan Kokke, this undulating structure is made of clear blue Lexan and steel and adds a striking visual accent to the urban environment. Iv translated the aesthetic design into a structurally sound whole, recommended foundation piles instead of concrete blocks, and ensured technical feasibility throughout the project. Iv worked closely with Moors Constructie Bergharen (MCB) on the realisation of the project.

The canopy consists of two unique, undulating forms, each with its own curvature — a complex steel structure that did not fall within existing standards or Eurocodes. Its shape also makes it highly susceptible to wind loads. Iv’s wealth of expertise in high-end and complex steel structures played a crucial role in tackling this challenge, particularly with regard to the ribbed structure beneath the canopy, which demanded creative and precise engineering.

The bus station canopy’s distinctive form and durable structure give the public space in Arnhem a recognisable identity, while sheltering travellers from the elements.
