The theatre auditorium at Cultura in Ede was in need of a substantial refurbishment. Technically, the space no longer met contemporary standards: outdated ventilation, limited comfort and an impractical balcony layout made reconfiguration necessary. Iv was responsible for the building services design and the refurbishment of the mechanical and electrical installations.
The existing auditorium offered very limited space for new installations. The original air handling system supplied air from the balcony towards the stage, resulting in draughts, uneven air distribution and energy loss.
The new design adopts displacement ventilation: cool air is introduced quietly and at low velocity beneath the seats, after which it rises naturally through the space. To enable this, existing ductwork had to be removed or rerouted, new shafts were designed and grilles were carefully positioned.
The structural raked seating was utilised as an air plenum, with air supplied to the auditorium through grilles integrated into the seat platforms. All elements had to be carefully coordinated to ensure the system operates quietly, free from draughts and out of sight, exactly as required in a theatre environment.
The theatre auditorium at Cultura is now more comfortable, more energy-efficient and fully up to current technical standards. Visitors benefit from a more pleasant indoor climate, free from draughts and noise disturbance, while sustainability measures have been implemented, including heat recovery within the ventilation system.
Significant improvements have also been made behind the scenes: the electrical installations have been completely renewed, including new cable trays and power supplies for the theatre lighting. Close collaboration with the architect and theatre designer ensured that technical solutions and audience experience are seamlessly aligned.
