Rotterdam, 21 April – Vijverberg Management Consultants, in collaboration with engineering consultancy Iv, has been selected by AEB Amsterdam to support project Aurora. The project focuses on large-scale CO₂ capture at the waste-to-energy plant in Amsterdam. Vijverberg is responsible for project management, while Iv is involved as technical partner. With a planned capture capacity of 480 kilotonnes of CO₂ per year, Aurora is one of the larger CO₂ capture projects in the Netherlands. Its impact is comparable to the annual emissions of around 200,000 households and approximately 10% of Amsterdam’s total emissions.
Project Aurora focuses on capturing CO₂ emissions from the flue gases of the waste-to-energy plant. The capture process uses amine technology. After capture, the gas is compressed and prepared for transport.
Integrating CO₂ capture into an existing installation requires careful coordination with existing processes and infrastructure. Aurora therefore focuses on reducing emissions from one of the more difficult sources to abate in urban areas and contributes to the further development of CCS in the Netherlands.
“With project Aurora, AEB is taking an important step towards reducing CO₂ emissions in the Netherlands. We are proud to be contributing to this sustainability project. Drawing on our expertise in contracting and project management, we are supporting AEB in the careful preparation of the project, in close collaboration with Iv as technical partner,” says Jouke van der Schors, Managing Director at Vijverberg.
Vijverberg is supporting AEB in contracting with the contractors. The focus is on preparing and negotiating execution contracts in the run-up to the investment decision. In this phase, Iv is providing technical expertise, including design review and quality control. Iv is also monitoring the construction permit application.
Project Aurora is scheduled for completion in early 2031, subject to further decision-making. Through their involvement in the preparatory phase and, depending on further decision-making, in the execution phase, Vijverberg and Iv are committed to the project for the longer term. Project Aurora therefore marks a multi-year collaboration within a technically complex and socially relevant project.
