Bio-energy facility development at VTTI Tilburg

bio-energy facility to process organic residue streams into green gas, organic fertiliser pellets and clean water.

The project

VTTI Bio-Energy Tilburg BV has developed a bio-energy facility to process organic residue streams into green gas, organic fertiliser pellets and clean water. Iv was responsible for composing the procurement packages for five major parts of the bio-energy facility, including the dryers, evaporator, decanters, air conditioning systems, and the pellet installation. Additionally, Iv oversaw  the basic and detailed engineering performed by contractors, by closely monitoring and managing the engineering documents. Alongside these activities, Iv supported the receipt of deliveries, supervises installation and is part of the commissioning team.

During the project, Iv conducted a feasibility study to determine whether expanding the equipment within the current grid connection would be feasible. Following this study, Iv began working on the basic design for the expansion, which involved optimizing the process while adding new equipment. This will enable VTTI Bio-Energy Tilburg to increase the supply capacity of green gas to the gas grid, produce liquid CO2 and discharge the clean water to surface water.

The challenge

The challenge is to meet the requirements for larger biogas plants. Iv helps parties that have become active in the biogas sector in recent years to apply specific laws and regulations. All of this occurs against a backdrop of strict deadlines, within which the project must be completed on time.

The impact

The project plays an important role in making the Netherlands more sustainable. The project will produce green gas for about 2.700 homes, increasing to approximately 15.000 homes in phase 2.  The facility has a negative CO2 footprint and will produce liquid food-grade CO2 as a byproduct. This project contributes to processing surplus manure and will produce organic fertiliser pellets. In addition, the effluent is of high quality and can be discharged into surface water.
