NTA 8970 assessment – Spoorzone, Tilburg

Commissioned by the municipality of Tilburg, Iv assessed the structural safety of the Spoorzone in Tilburg in accordance with NTA 8790. The project comprises two interconnected buildings: the Koepelhal and the Wagenmakerij. Both halls, built in 1902 and formerly part of the Dutch Railways (NS) workshop complex, are now used for large-scale events and concerts. Individually, they can accommodate 3,100 and 4,900 people respectively. Combined, the maximum capacity is 8,000 people. Iv carried out several technical inspections and analysed the construction dossier to map out the critical structural components.

Due to the number of people present at one time, the Spoorzone falls under Consequence Class CC3 and phase 1 of the structural safety assessment. Both halls are large industrial buildings featuring masonry walls, heavy concrete floors, and steel support structures. The Koepelhal consists of three-hinged bow trusses arranged in a repeating pattern. The Wagenmakerij has a continuous beam structure on steel columns, fully connected using riveted joints.

Thanks to the clear assessment framework, targeted sampling, and extensive experience in designing and evaluating large public buildings, Iv was able to provide a comprehensive and reliable overview of the structural safety of the Spoorzone in Tilburg within a short timeframe. The findings have been recorded in a report for the competent authority. Through this work, Iv supports the municipality of Tilburg in the safe and responsible use of this historic site and contributes to ensuring public safety at events.
