The Merwede Bridge on the A27 is a crucial link in the Dutch road network. Corrosion was identified on the bridge’s suspension cables. As the bridge is not due to be replaced for around another ten years, an emergency repair to the suspension cables was required to ensure safety in the interim. Rijkswaterstaat asked Iv to carry out targeted inspections. Iv subsequently provided support with the design, project controls and supervision during the works. In collaboration with ARUP and the STERK contractor consortium, the measures were carried out over ten weekends, with minimal disruption to traffic.
The 64 suspension cables had been affected by corrosion and required prompt, thorough intervention. This called for clear decisions: which measures would be most appropriate, given the required remaining service life, while also causing as little disruption as possible? Through smart planning and close collaboration, disruption to road users was kept to a minimum.
Together with the project partners, Iv developed a detailed design in which the suspension cables were fitted with a ‘cableskin’, a protective layer that prevents corrosion. This was the first application of its kind in the Netherlands. The lower sections were given a new protective coating system and improved watertight anti-vandalism caps. Using a TEKLA model, Iv kept progress visually clear and enabled efficient control of the works during execution. This approach will allow the Merwede Bridge to remain safely in use over the coming years, until it is replaced.
