Triple X, a new landmark for Amsterdam

This year marks the 750th anniversary of our capital city! To celebrate the occasion, an iconic landmark is being created that aims to further elevate Amsterdam’s international profile. With a distinctly Amsterdam twist, the structure will consist of three stacked X’s – a nod to the iconic XXX symbol from the city’s coat of arms. Engineering firm Iv, renowned for designing complex steel structures, has been selected to deliver the structural design of this extraordinary landmark.

A tourist attraction steeped in history

In addition to being an architectural masterpiece, the new landmark is set to become a major tourist attraction. The structure will stand at approximately 300 metres tall and is expected to draw visitors from around the globe. Each level of the three stacked X’s will offer a unique experience inspired by Amsterdam’s rich history. Highlights include an interactive exhibition on the canals, a virtual journey through the Golden Age, and a panoramic terrace with views across the city.

Structural challenge with sustainable ambitions

The landmark’s design presents a remarkable technical challenge. The stacking of three large X-shaped volumes makes for an exceptionally complex structure, with unique engineering hurdles. Moreover, the design must meet rigorous standards, being resistant to extreme weather conditions and fully energy-neutral. There are also strict requirements for safety, maintenance, sustainability, and circular construction. One particularly demanding aspect is the design of a custom lift to transport visitors effortlessly to the restaurant on the top floor. Iv’s expertise in complex structural engineering is a perfect fit for this challenge. In the past, Iv has contributed to the design of iconic structures such as the London Eye, the Beijing Great Wheel, and the Ferrari Experience in Abu Dhabi.

A true brain-teaser of a design

Jaco van der Schans, Director of Consultancy at Iv, explains: “We’re incredibly proud to be working on this exceptional project. Iv has specialised in designing highly complex structures for 76 years, and this is exactly the kind of challenge our engineers thrive on. These are true brain-teasers, where we must push the boundaries of what’s technically possible. That intricate puzzle-solving is what we love most. At Iv, we call it: Engineering that excites!”

Design work is already well underway, and construction of the landmark is expected to begin early next year. The name and exact location of the structure will be announced in due course. One thing is certain: Amsterdam is gaining a striking new attraction!
