Green River Well improves flood safety and strengthens the Meuse landscape
During peak water levels of the River Meuse, additional space is required. In Well, a Green River is being developed. The Limburg Water Authority has commissioned Van Oord for this area development. Van Oord is working together with engineering company Iv on a flood relief channel that provides additional discharge capacity during high water. This lowers water levels and reduces the risk of flooding in the region.
The Green River Well is part of a broader approach to better protect the Netherlands against the effects of climate change. The area around Well is being redeveloped to improve flood protection in Limburg while also enhancing the spatial quality of the landscape.
The development of the Green River requires careful consideration of multiple interests. In addition to flood safety, nature, landscape, agriculture and recreation also play an important role. Existing infrastructure adds technical and spatial complexity to both the design and execution.
Within the project, Iv is responsible for the technical design of the new bridge and contributes to the flood protection measures, including flood gates, sheet pile walls, earthen embankments and road infrastructure on the dikes. In addition, Iv carries out various activities around Well Castle. These measures ensure that water can be safely discharged during high water and that the area remains protected. In this way, Iv translates the flood protection challenge into practical and robust solutions, with attention to sustainability and the surrounding environment.
The Green River in Well is an integrated area development where multiple objectives come together. In addition to conveying water during high flows, the area must accommodate nature development, recreation, nature-inclusive agriculture and an improvement in spatial quality. This combination places high demands on the design.
