NTA 8790 assessment – Baskensburg Sports Complex

Commissioned by the municipality of Vlissingen, Iv carried out an assessment of the structural safety of the Baskensburg sports hall complex in accordance with NTA 8790. The complex comprises several sports halls used for a wide range of sports activities and various events. The largest hall dates from 1968 and was extended to the north side in 1992. In total, the complex can accommodate approximately 700 people.

Although the complex does not fall under phase 1 of the statutory assessment, it was decided in consultation with the municipality to proceed with a structural safety assessment in anticipation of phase 2. The main structure of the large hall consists of twelve three-hinged bow trusses made of laminated timber, which are topped with timber joists and the roof assembly. The northern extension was built using steel. Along the long sides are concrete stands supported by a steel structure, and the ground floor houses changing rooms, sanitary facilities and offices. Notably, the large bow trusses penetrate the façades and are braced externally via steel hinges on concrete footings.

The municipality of Vlissingen now has a clear, substantiated understanding of the structural safety of the complex, enabling the competent authority to make timely, well-informed decisions. This approach ensures the safety of this busy venue is actively safeguarded and helps to identify potential risks before it is too late, even though there is currently no legal obligation to do so.
