NTA 8790 assessment – Energiehuis, Dordrecht

Commissioned by the municipality of Dordrecht, Iv assessed the structural safety of the Energiehuis in accordance with NTA 8790. In addition, a technical inspection was carried out. The Energiehuis accommodates, among others, hospitality venues, pop vanue Bibelot, three theatre halls, offices, and cultural education spaces, with a total capacity of approximately 2,200 people. The building consists of three former power stations dating from 1910 to 1930, which were transformed into a multifunctional cultural centre in 2013.

Although the Energiehuis formally falls under phase 2 of the statutory assessment pursuant to NTA 8790, the municipality of Dordrecht opted to have the building assessed in advance of this requirement. This called for a meticulous evaluation of a complex and historic building structure, primarily comprising load-bearing masonry, concrete floors, and heavy remnants from the original engine rooms. Major alterations have also been made to the roof structures, including the addition of a central light well with staircases.

Drawing on its experience in designing large public buildings alongside the NTA 8790 guidelines, Iv provided a comprehensive assessment of the building’s structural safety.

Through this assessment, Iv has made a significant contribution to safeguarding the structural integrity of a complex public building. By conducting a thorough technical inspection and document review, Iv provided the client with insight into the structure’s condition and practical guidance for future maintenance and management.
