AEB Amsterdam is working on large-scale CO₂ capture at its waste-to-energy plant in Amsterdam through Project Aurora. The project uses amine-based technology to separate CO₂ from flue gases, after which the CO₂ is compressed for transport. With an intended capture capacity of 480 kilotonnes of CO₂ per year, Aurora is one of the larger CO₂ capture projects in the Netherlands.
Vijverberg Management Consultants supports AEB with project management and contractor selection and contracting activities in preparation for the final investment decision. As technical partner, Iv provides expertise in design review and quality control, while also monitoring the building permit application process.
Integrating a CO₂ capture installation into an existing waste-to-energy plant requires careful alignment with existing processes and infrastructure. The project is technically complex and focuses on reducing emissions from one of the more difficult-to-abate sources in urban areas, requiring thorough technical preparation.
This requires close cooperation between all project partners. To translate complex technical challenges into practical and buildable solutions, process engineering, installations and structures are considered as an integrated whole. This integrated approach, with a strong focus on quality and safety, results in designs that are practical, feasible and aligned with operational reality.
Project Aurora aims to reduce CO₂ emissions from the flue gases of the waste-to-energy plant in Amsterdam and contributes to the further development of CCS in the Netherlands. With an intended capture capacity of 480 kilotonnes of CO₂ per year, Aurora is one of the larger CO₂ capture projects in the Netherlands. This is comparable to the annual emissions of approximately 200,000 households and around 10% of Amsterdam’s total CO₂ emissions.
