Basic and detailed engineering of a 240-metre Compact Ringer Crane

Compact Ringer Crane (HRC 3000)

The project

With an impressive height of 240 metres, the Huisman Compact Ringer Crane (HRC 3000), ordered by Danish heavy lift company BMS Heavy Cranes, belongs to the biggest cranes in the world. Huisman, responsible for the design and construction, faced limited engineering capacity for this project and called on Iv for support. Working in close collaboration with Huisman’s team, the concept design was further developed, and Iv performed the basic and detailed engineering of critical components, including the main boom, jib, stay beams, and back mast.

The challenge

Only six weeks after the project started, the high-strength steel needed to be ordered, even though the design was still in development. Thanks to Huisman’s concept phase and Iv’s expertise and dedication, it was possible to deliver tailored engineering solutions within this tight timeline. Iv developed an automated FEA model to automatically calculate all crane configurations, significantly accelerating the process.

The ringer crane was manufactured at Huisman production facilities in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and China, and subsequently transported to Denmark. The size and weight of all components were specifically designed for road transport (including many oversized parts), taking into account the existing infrastructure.

The impact

Iv supported Huisman in meeting the project’s challenging deadlines. The Compact Ringer Crane is now operational in northern Denmark, where it is being used for the construction of the next generation of offshore wind turbines. This contributes to the global energy transition and the growth of renewable energy.
