Detailed design for the London Eye

London Eye

The project

The London Eye is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. This remarkable steel structure is 120 metres in diameter, 135 metres high, weighs 1700 tonnes, and has 32 enclosed capsules. Hollandia commissioned Iv to provide the detailed design. Although initially intended to be a temporary structure, the London Eye has become a permanent feature of the London skyline.

The challenge

The unique nature of the steel structure required an innovative technical approach. Dynamics, fatigue and stability were key considerations in the design process. Architecturally, the Ferris wheel resembles a bicycle wheel, with cable ‘spokes’ creating transparency. With 32 glass capsules, each holding 25 people, the aim was to allow 800 people to simultaneously enjoy the view over London. The entire project, from design to commissioning, had to be completed within a year. Iv was responsible for the structural design and assembly calculations of this exceptional steel structure.

The impact

The impact of the London Eye extends far beyond the structure itself. Since opening in 2000, the London Eye has attracted millions of visitors each year. The project was a challenging process that required architects, designers and contractors to combine their skills and creativity. The result was a rewarding outcome that has enriched the city of London with one of its most iconic landmarks. Upon completion, the London Eye was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world and still holds the title of the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe. In addition to being an architectural triumph, the London Eye is an essential part of London’s rich cultural experience.
