Nevesbu and Iv worked together to develop a concept for a floating offshore substation. They combined Nevesbu’s specialist knowledge of floating structures with Iv’s expertise in offshore substation design. The concept was designed to meet the requirements of offshore wind energy, focussing on safety, reliability, availability and lifespan.
Producing offshore wind energy in waters deeper than 150 metres requires efficient, reliable and affordable solutions. The costs associated with traditional ‘bottom-founded’ structures increase exponentially in deeper waters, creating a need for alternative solutions. However, developing floating substations that can operate in harsh weather conditions has been a significant challenge.
The platform is designed to operate in severe weather conditions with minimal motion, thus reducing stress on the power cables. The concept can be applied in deep water areas such as the North Sea, the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean. The platform would also contribute to the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels and the further development of sustainable energy sources.
