Nature-friendly embankment Hollandsche IJssel

Nature-friendly embankment Hollandsche IJssel

The project

Commissioned by De Stichtse Rijnlanden District Water Control Board (HDSR), Iv, in collaboration with The Weather Makers, developed an innovative design for a nature-friendly embankment along the Canalised Hollandsche IJssel. This project stems from the ambition to implement sustainable and ecological improvements within existing water infrastructure. As part of a framework agreement, Iv was asked to create an alternative design for an 80-metre pilot section, with the aim of promoting biodiversity and harnessing natural water dynamics.

The challenge

The available space alongside the waterway is limited, and there are a variety of interests to consider. The width of the waterway must remain sufficient enough to allow for both discharge capacity and marine navigation. In addition, property rights are a factor, as parts of the embankment are privately owned. This made it essential to develop a design that could be realised within these constraints.

The design cleverly incorporates openings in the sheet piling, allowing water movement to continue as vessels pass. This natural rhythm contributes to a healthier ecosystem. Furthermore, variation in the riverbed profile creates diverse habitats for flora and fauna.

The impact

The district water control board is applying the design in the dike and embankment improvement project ’Willeskop – Phase 2’,  along the southern section of the Canalised Hollandsche IJssel. The effects will be monitored in terms of ecological output, and the results will be compared with those of more traditional, nature-friendly embankment designs. With relatively minor interventions, the Hollandsche IJssel nature-friendly embankment creates a natural embankment that improves water quality and stimulates biodiversity.
