The unique lock gates of the large lock in Veere, dating from the 1950s, are reaching the end of their life and need to be replaced. The aim of the project is to design new curved steel mitre gates with a service life of 100 years. Iv has designed the new inner and outer gates for the Province of Zeeland, from concept to implementation-ready design. Every detail in the design was carefully considered to ensure that the new lock gates would fit perfectly into the existing lock head. The task of delving into the archives and control measurements on site here was unavoidable.
Replacing the lock gates poses several challenges, mainly due to the technical complexity and the need for precision. The new gates must fit perfectly into the existing lock infrastructure. This requires a detailed investigation of the current situation and precise measurements to ensure that every component fits seamlessly. In addition, the new gates must be easy to maintain and meet modern technical requirements. The design allows for future adaptations, such as larger operating mechanisms, to ensure the life and functionality of the gates.
The new lock gates for the large lock in Veere are easier to maintain and equipped with levelling openings and rubber profiles to ensure a watertight seal. These innovative designs will be manufactured in phases over the coming years, including spare gates for both lock heads. The new set of gates reduces maintenance costs and contributes to the safety and reliability of shipping through the lock.
