NTA 8790 assessment – De Doelen

The project

Commissioned by PVM, Iv assessed the structural integrity of De Doelen Rotterdam in accordance with NTA 8790.

De Doelen is a concert, conference and events venue that opened in 1966 and was substantially extended in the 1990s, including the addition of the Willem Burger Hall. With venues such as the Main Hall, the Jurriaanse Hall and the Willem Burger Hall, the complex has a total capacity of more than 5,000 people.

The challenge

Due to its size and public function, De Doelen falls within the first phase of the statutory structural integrity assessment under NTA 8790.

The building comprises a range of structural sections and structural systems, including in-situ reinforced concrete columns, floors and walls, heavy roof trusses, precast grandstands, preflex girders and steel truss structures. The later addition of the Willem Burger Hall further increased the complexity of the overall structural arrangement.

A technical inspection was therefore carried out and the available construction documentation was reviewed to assess the principal structural elements in detail. Drawing on Iv’s experience in designing and detailing large public buildings, and applying the NTA 8790 assessment framework, a comprehensive picture of the building’s structural integrity was established.

The impact

By providing a clear and demonstrable assessment of the structural integrity of De Doelen, PVM and the competent authority can effectively evaluate and continue to safeguard the safety of this complex public building.
