Reinspection and renovation proposal for Middelharnis lock

On behalf of the Municipality of Middelharnis (Goeree-Overflakkee), Iv assessed the technical condition of Middelharnis Lock. The lock connects Middelharnis with the Haringvliet and forms part of the region’s port-related infrastructure. A clear assessment was required of the lock’s current condition and the options for future maintenance. Based on an extensive desk study and inspections, Iv provided insight into the technical condition of the lock and prepared a renovation proposal.

The inspections found that the lock is generally in reasonable condition, with the exception of the lock gates, which no longer meet current requirements. To obtain a complete picture of the structural condition, Iv also carried out diving inspections to assess the lock’s foundations.

The main challenge lay in preparing a clear renovation proposal, despite the limited information available on the original foundations. Obtaining accurate data through diving inspections was essential in order to assess the risk of damage to the foundations. The specific requirements of Waterschap Hollandse Delta also had to be taken into account, as the lock also forms part of the flood defence system. The selected renovation approach had to be cost-effective while also safeguarding flood protection in the area.

The study concluded that renovation is a feasible option. The lock gates will be replaced to meet the water authority’s requirements and to safeguard the lock’s function as a flood defence structure. The renovation will preserve Middelharnis Lock as an important link between the harbour and the Haringvliet, while ensuring the safety of the area behind the flood defences for the years ahead. With the renovation proposal now in place, the Municipality of Middelharnis can make targeted investments in the future-proof management and maintenance of this critical lock.
