The renovation of Puttershoek Ferry Harbour has been in full swing since 2021. Iv is supporting the municipality of Hoeksche Waard in this project aimed at restoring and renewing the harbour infrastructure. Iv is responsible for the technical and contractual preparation, tendering, and supervision of the construction process. From the start, Iv has played an essential role in developing the sketch design, preparing the necessary documents, and coordinating the tender procedure via TenderNet. After careful assessment, Genemuiden-based Beens Groep was selected as the contractor. In collaboration with the municipality of Hoeksche Waard and Beens Groep, Iv is working with the construction team to elaborate the design further and prepare for the actual implementation. The municipality is responsible for project management, while Iv fulfils the role of technical and contract management and project control.
One of the main challenges in this project is the location of the Puttershoek Ferry Harbour, which is situated in a residential area. An innovative approach will be used to carry out the work as efficiently and safely as possible, whereby the harbour mouth will be closed off and the inner harbour temporarily dewatered and drained. This ‘out-of-the-box’ idea makes it possible to carry out the work in a dry environment, significantly reducing the implementation’s complexity.
In addition, the diversity of the work is a challenge. The renovation includes replacing a brick quay wall and installing a steel sheet pile wall, whereby the nearby historic buildings and the primary flood defence must be considered. Ecological considerations also play a role: the work should preferably be conducted outside the breeding season or follow an ecological work protocol to prevent any disruption to nature.
The Puttershoek Ferry Harbour renovation contributes to the reinforcement of the harbour’s infrastructure and the surrounding area. The renovation can be carried out safely and efficiently thanks to innovative working methods, avoiding negative consequences for the flood defence or the area’s ecological value. The execution of the project ensures that both the harbour’s east and west sides are renovated uniformly, using modern techniques to ensure the safety and sustainability of the harbour. Iv plays a crucial role in technical management, contract management, site management and supervision during the work, thus ensuring the project’s progress.
