The project

The Rhenen drinking water production facility, operated by Vitens, extracts groundwater and treats it to produce clean drinking water for the surrounding area. Due to increasing demand, the facility had reached the limits of its supply capacity. Additionally, the installation no longer met the requirements for supply security. To ensure sufficient drinking water can continue to be delivered in the future, a renovation was necessary. Iv was responsible for the design and preparation of the contract documents, covering the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process automation, and civil/structural engineering. Iv also developed a phasing plan for the conversion works.

The challenge

The renovation involved:
• Replacing plate aerators with spray nozzles.
• Physically separating the filters.
• Installing a platform to improve safe access to the installation.
• Replacing the blowers in the filter building.
• Replacing three well shafts and two submersible pumps.
• Adding a second outgoing pipeline towards Rhenen and a second pump line towards Elst
The new installations and pipework had to be integrated into the existing cellar, which was not originally designed for this purpose. To ensure proper integration of the new pumps and to guarantee optimal accessibility and safety, a 3D model of the existing situation was created. This model served as the basis for integrating the new installations as efficiently as possible.

The impact

The new design for the renovation of the Rhenen drinking water production facility increases supply security while safeguarding water quality. The structural modifications and replacement of outdated components result in a more robust system with improved accessibility.
