The impressive new entertainment and shopping centre, including a cinema, in the southern English city of Southampton, has become a real attraction. Located in the city’s bustling business district, the cinema’s futuristic design immediately catches the eye. The cinema offers a unique film experience and was the first in the UK to introduce standard laser projection and Dolby Atmos on every screen. The quest for ultimate comfort is central to every aspect of the cinema experience.
The main structural elements of the movie theatres consist of building-high trusses made from tubular and H-section bearing piles (for elements that bear lighter loads). Hollandia commissioned Iv to carry out detailed calculations and provide workshop drawings for the complex. In addition, adjustments were proposed to optimise the structural behaviour of the building.
Watermark WestQuay, with Showcase Cinema de Lux as its centrepiece, not only boasts a striking design but also makes a significant contribution to the local economy with around 150 new jobs. Various restaurants and the Hollywood Bowl complex enhance the selection of recreational facilities, making Watermark WestQuay a varied and attractive destination for the Southampton community. As well as serving as an architectural landmark, the cinema is a tangible source of cultural enrichment, bringing the community together to enjoy film and entertainment.
