Sustainable SWRO installation for WEB Aruba

Sustainable SWRO installation Aruba

The project

Aruba’s drinking water is among the best quality in the world. They obviously want to maintain this. Therefore, Water- en Energiebedrijf Aruba (WEB) engaged Iv to carry out the replacement of the aging MSFE plants with a sustainable SWRO installation with a larger capacity. This included the design, engineering and implementation of the new plant, which uses reverse osmosis technology to extract drinking water from (salt) seawater.

The challenge

The main challenge was to increase the production capacity of drinking water for Aruba, taking into account the limited availability of freshwater sources and the growing demand for drinking water. In addition, the new plants had to meet strict sustainability standards and achieve significant energy savings compared to the old plants.

The impact

The replacement of the ageing MSFE plants with the sustainable SWRO installation has led to a significant increase in the production capacity of drinking water in Aruba. With a production capacity of 24,000 m3 of water per day, the new plant can cover as much as 73% of the total water demand on the island. Moreover, the new plant results in energy savings of 40% compared to the old plants, so the project not only strengthens Aruba’s water supply, but also contributes to the island’s sustainability goals by reducing its carbon footprint.
