How do you quickly and efficiently gain insight into the structural risks across a large portfolio of civil structures? The Province of Gelderland manages more than 7,000 civil structures. Given the scale of the portfolio, having a clear overview is essential. At the same time, obtaining that overview is challenging, as neither the time nor the budget is available to assess the structural condition of every individual asset.
Iv was therefore commissioned to assess the portfolio using the ABC method (Area-Based Structural Integrity Assessment). This approach quickly identifies which assets present the greatest structural risk and which do not currently require immediate action. The outcome is a well-founded basis for prioritising maintenance, structural reassessments and replacement.
The Province of Gelderland is responsible for a large and diverse portfolio of civil structures, varying in size and complexity. Gaining a clear understanding of the condition of every asset is a significant challenge. In addition, the amount of available information differed from one structure to another.
With limited time and budget, it is not feasible to inspect, let alone strengthen, every structure at once. Nevertheless, a reliable overview is essential to support informed decision-making and safeguard structural integrity.
The ABC approach has provided the Province of Gelderland with a clear and evidence-based overview of which civil structures require immediate attention and which can safely remain in service for the time being. The findings have been compiled into a clear matrix containing all relevant information for each structure.
The assessment identified approximately sixty structures that the province will investigate in greater detail over the coming years and, where necessary, subject to structural reassessment. This enables the province to manage risks effectively while efficiently prioritising maintenance, structural reassessments and replacement programmes.
"It was an overwhelming amount of information. Iv examined every piece of data available in the digital archive, including reports, inspection records, drawings, calculations and repair records. If we had had to do that ourselves, it would have taken us months."
Wouter, managing director Infra and also COO of Iv, would be delighted to discuss this with you! Get in touch via +31 88 943 3200 or send a message.
