Design verification for Euromax terminal expansion

The project

Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam (ECT) is expanding the capacity of the Euromax terminal in Rotterdam with 34 new automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMGs), distributed across 17 new stack lanes. Iv was appointed as an independent engineering consultancy to verify the design of these ZPMC-built cranes against ECT’s requirements and the applicable standards.

The scope included verification of the steel structure and mechanical components, based on independent shadow calculations and a review of the drawings. Iv also carried out an extensive assessment of the spreaders.

The challenge

Key areas of focus included the crane wheels, fatigue-critical spreader components and the crane’s positioning accuracy at high lifting heights. The exposed location on the Maasvlakte presented an additional challenge, as the cranes must continue to operate reliably in severe wind conditions without compromising container positioning accuracy in the stack, handling speed or reliability.

The impact

Through its design verification, Iv is contributing to the reliable expansion of automated container handling at the ECT Euromax terminal. The new ARMGs are designed for long-term, intensive operation in demanding conditions, supporting service-life reliability and cost-efficient performance. Thanks to Iv’s independent advice and engineering calculations, ECT can invest in a future-proof terminal expansion with confidence.
