Olam Food Ingredients, based in Koog aan de Zaan, aims to reduce the gas consumption of its cocoa factory by fifty percent by burning its cocoa shells in a biomass installation. In addition, the number of transport movements will be significantly reduced.
Iv provided the engineering for all utilities and the building for this project, including a new high-voltage transformer and power connections for the boiler and associated equipment. In addition, Iv supplied an integrated, optimised design and all project management, procurement assistance, and construction management.
The construction of the project in the marshy Zaan region presented design and planning challenges. The main challenge during construction was meeting the client’s tight schedule and working on a very confined construction site, commonly referred to as the ‘postage stamp’ on the work floor.
The biomass installation will significantly reduce the cocoa factory’s gas consumption. By reducing the number of transport movements, a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels will also be achieved.
