Malieklos is a demolition and new construction project in the Slaghek district of Rotterdam Zuid, driven by the need to improve urban areas. This social housing project in Hillesluis consists of an apartment block named after the two adjacent streets. The new homes in the Malieklos represent both a replacement and an upgrade, focusing on sustainability and energy efficiency. The project demonstrates urban renewal and a sustainable approach to meeting modern housing needs in Rotterdam Zuid.
The demolished properties were structurally due for replacement and suffered from a number of problems, including foundation issues. Iv provided installation advice and structural physics services up to the final design level for this new construction project. Ultimately, the project won the Rotterdam Architecture Prize in 2022 and was featured in the Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook 2022/2023. The jury sees Malieklos as undeniable proof that the limited budgets associated with social housing need not inhibit the achievement of high-quality architecture.
A total of 51 apartments, 2 stacked duplex units and 31 single-family homes with gardens have been built. The new homes are built to be energy-efficient and gas-free, with solar panels on the roofs to help reduce energy bills. In addition, rainwater is collected in gardens and green roofs in the inner area. Besides sustainability, the Malieklos project also offers social benefits. Elderly residents can enjoy the peace and quiet of their homes and neighbourhood while city life and amenities are nearby. The community centre, accessible to all, serves as a meeting place for socialising, coffee, exercise, workshops and creative activities, strengthening social cohesion within the community.
