The N208 in Haarlem is a crucial provincial arterial road with a significant amount of through traffic and crossing (bicycle) traffic from the surrounding districts of Aerdenhout, Bloemendaal and Overveen. The result is traffic congestion at various junctions along the road, with through traffic facing up to eight sets of traffic lights. Due to a lack of coordination between these traffic lights, journey times along the route vary considerably depending on how long road users have to wait. On behalf of the Province of Noord-Holland, Iv designed and implemented a green wave in the existing traffic control systems on the N208.
The challenge was to optimise traffic flow on the N208, improving traffic flow and reducing journey times. The aim was to design and implement a green wave that would not only improve the flow of through traffic but also increase the safety of pedestrians crossing the road.
The green wave has significantly improved the flow of traffic on the road. Thanks to the green wave, traffic on the N208 does not have to stop at traffic lights as often, significantly reducing overall journey times. In addition, the improved traffic light control has made it safer for pedestrians to cross the road, contributing to overall road safety.
