The A9 motorway between Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht will be widened and made fit for the future, with a strong focus on sustainable integration. One of the biggest challenges within this mega-project is the new Schiphol Bridge. Iv is the design partner within the VEENIX consortium for the ‘East and West Package’ and has been commissioned by the Spanish company FCC Construcción to prepare the preliminary and final design and the implementation design for the Schiphol Bridge. The aim is to reuse as much material and components as possible from the existing bridge structure. Space has also been reserved for the integration of eco-zones in the underpasses of the Schiphol Bridge.
The A9 project is complex because the work is being carried out in an urban area with limited space, and traffic flow on the A9 must be maintained at all times. This made designing the final situation and the construction phasing extremely complex. As the design partner, Iv is not only responsible for the project management and the technical design but also has a strong role in guiding the implementation. The planning, construction phasing, collaboration with other (design) partners under FCC, and technical details require a high level of expertise and coordination, which gives the project a high-risk profile. The structural parts of the Schiphol Bridge will be reused and widened as much as possible. The existing bascule chamber, foundations, pillars and bridge decks will be adapted, strengthened and widened, and the bridge will receive new electrical and mechanical installations, a new operating room and two new movable decks.
A widened A9, including the new Schiphol Bridge, will improve traffic flow and accessibility. In addition, the future-proof Schiphol Bridge will increase the reliability and availability of the road and waterway connection, promoting economic growth and regional development of Schiphol, Amsterdam and Almere.
