In early 2025, ScottishPower Renewables awarded HSM Offshore Energy the contract for the full EPCIC scope of the East Anglia TWO offshore substation. As a subcontractor to HSM, Iv is responsible for providing engineering, procurement and integration services for the HVAC offshore substation. This includes the incorporation of client-supplied high-voltage equipment, procurement of UKCA-compliant components, and coordination of DNV certification processes in close collaboration with HSM. East Anglia TWO will be located approximately 33 kilometres off the Suffolk coast.
Integrating client-supplied high-voltage equipment and control panels presents spatial challenges due to their relatively large footprint. As increasing the platform’s dimensions is not feasible, Iv addresses this by ensuring all systems are accommodated efficiently within the available space. The topside will weigh approximately 5,100 tonnes, with the jacket structure weighing around 3,700 tonnes. In addition to the technical aspects, the procurement process must comply with strict certification requirements. All components are required to meet UKCA standards, introduced under the post-Brexit regulatory framework. Furthermore, the substation also needs to comply with DNV ST-0145 and specific technical requirements. These combined requirements demand close coordination across all disciplines.
Iv has prior experience with projects in UK waters, including its contributions to the Neart na Gaoithe HVAC offshore substations and the Sofia HVDC offshore converter platform. These projects involved similar scopes in terms of system integration, regulatory compliance and procurement. This background reinforces Iv’s role in the East Anglia TWO project.
The East Anglia TWO HVAC offshore substation will contribute to delivering renewable electricity to the equivalent of almost one million households. Alongside ScottishPower Renewables’ other projects within the East Anglia Hub, it strengthens the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure and supports the national target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Construction is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2025. Jacket installation is scheduled for the third quarter of 2027 and topside installation for the fourth quarter of 2027. Scheduled for commissioning in 2028, the wind farm will generate up to 960 megawatts of renewable energy.
