The Thor Offshore Wind Farm is located approximately 22 kilometres off the Danish coast near Thorsminde, in the North Sea. With a planned capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts, making it Denmarkâs largest and most ambitious offshore wind farm to date. It is the first of three wind farms developed under the Energy Agreement of 2018.
The wind farm is owned by RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management. RWE is responsible for construction and operation, while HSM Offshore Energy is executing the full EPCIC scope for the offshore substation. Under contract to HSM Offshore Energy, Iv is responsible for the design, engineering, and integration of both the topside and jacket.
The 72 wind turbines of the Thor offshore wind farm each have a capacity of 15 megawatts. This results in high electrical loads and a large volume of equipment to be integrated on the substation. The limited space required a detailed and space-efficient layout, with precise coordination of all systems and interfaces within the overall design.
Delivering the substation required a high level of technical precision. The combination of high power capacity and strict weight requirements made the design particularly challenging, resulting in a compact substation with an impressive power-to-weight ratio.
Once operational, the wind farm will generate enough green energy to power around 1.5 million Danish households, helping Denmark reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and move further towards a sustainable energy system.
