The province of Zuid-Holland and the municipality of Midden-Delfland have taken the initiative to make a section of the N223 safer. Iv was involved from the early initiative phase through to the construction supervision. During the project, Iv took care of the project team of the Province of Zuid-Holland and fulfilled all the roles of the IPM team. Iv took the lead in design, conditioning and interface management, working closely with stakeholders to explore the various options and find the best solution. In addition, Iv prepared the final design, carried out the land acquisition and provided legal and technical support during the objection process.
The N223 (Westland – Midden-Delfland) is an essential link in the road network between the A4 and the A20. Although the road is classified as a distributor road according to the provincial classification plan, the layout does not correspond to the function. The road has a narrow profile with no clear separation of lanes, and there are many junctions and driveways to plots directly off the main road. There is a parallel carriageway for short sections and a two-way cycle lane on the southeast side. The result of this design, combined with intensive use, is a high accident frequency and density, which is 1.5 to 2 times higher than the average for roads in Zuid-Holland.
