Deformation measurements in the Port of Rotterdam

Deformation measurements

The project

In the busy Port of Rotterdam, quickly detecting any deformations of quay walls, jetties, and civil engineering works is essential. Deviations can indicate uneven settlement, damage and/or overload. With partner RPS/Tetratech, Iv regularly performs deformation measurements to ensure these risks remain controlled and the objects remain available for users.

The challenge

We deal with numerous clients in the port, each with its own contact persons, safety regimes and registration procedures. The dynamics in the Port of Rotterdam make carrying out deformation measurements extra challenging. For example, it can happen that a vessel may need to be moored at a quay when a measurement is planned. In such a case, the measurement will have to be postponed.

The impact

Regularly performing deformation measurements on quay walls and jetties and civil engineering works contributes to ensuring the availability of these objects. A new feature within this framework contract is that the results are also supplied in JSON format in addition to a report. This enables the Port of Rotterdam Authority to compare the results and combine them with other collection methods for deformation measurements, such as satellites and sensors.
