The Neherkade is a busy road in the centre of The Hague, located along the Laakhaven. The Neherkade is an area access road and is part of The Hague’s city ring. This city ring ensures that the centre of The Hague can remain largely car-free and is therefore essential for the functioning of The Hague’s road network. To improve traffic flow, traffic safety, and air quality, part of the Neherkade in The Hague has been redesigned. Iv was involved in the reconstruction of the Neherkade from the beginning. Together with a team from the Besix-Dura Vermeer combination (CBDV), a smart and sustainable design was created. The reconstruction involves the redevelopment of the Neherkade between the Trekvlietbrug and the Calandstraat in The Hague. A new tunnel and quay wall were part of this.
An important requirement was that the design and redevelopment had to be economical and sustainable and realised with minimal environmental and traffic disruption. Intensive collaboration took place from the tender phase to achieve an optimal design within the set requirements and conditions. The work of the disciplines tunnel design, quay wall design, track design, road design, and execution came together in one integrated design. Because the execution was very close to the design, it was decided at an early stage to make the integrated design in a Building Information Model (BIM). This way, full control was maintained over the design in relation to the tight execution schedule.
Iv created a design for the redevelopment that required 30% less material than the original reference design. Iv also optimised the new kilometre-long quay wall, which was necessary to make room for the construction of the tunnel, by increasing the day size of the combi wall. This required fewer tubular piles and sheet piles for the quay construction, resulting in a shorter construction time and less inconvenience for the surrounding area.
