Maintenance of the Schiphol Tunnel

Underground railway tunnel in motion blur

The project

With more than fifty trains an hour and 100,000 passengers daily, the Schiphol Tunnel is one of the busiest rail routes in the Netherlands. Extensive maintenance is required to maintain this vital function as the Schiphol Tunnel has reached retirement age. Iv is providing the implementation guidance to the construction team for ProRail.

The challenge

During the work on the five-kilometre track section, Iv will provide technical support in addition to implementation guidance, from testing designs to implementation and delivery. Particular emphasis has been placed on replacing outdated railway structures, for which innovative solutions will be applied. For example, a newly developed slab structure that meets new European standards for boarding heights. Iv is also responsible for overseeing construction coordination and safety and technical inspections.

The impact

Adjustments to the track structure and adaptations inside the Schiphol Tunnel should give the line another forty years of service. The reliability of the route and the accessibility of the most important airport in the Netherlands will also be guaranteed. The renovated railway tunnel meets current safety standards and contributes to a more efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
