On the initiative of the ANWB, Iv has been working on the development of CycleRAP. This method aims to improve the safety of cyclists by providing insight into the safety of cycling infrastructure and roads. CycleRAP classifies cycle paths and roads based on safety scores that indicate the risk of accidents for cyclists. These scores are calculated by systematically mapping cycling infrastructure using current road imagery. Iv has developed and applied this method for the province of Fryslân.
The development of CycleRAP required in-depth knowledge of cyclist safety and road characteristics. The process involved collecting detailed data on cycle routes and roads and analysing this data to produce reliable safety scores. Our in-house developed 3D scan car was used to obtain accurate measurements. The data generates a point cloud of the environment with the exact location of all objects. The road is analysed for 34 road characteristics every 25 metres.
CycleRAP provides a standardised way of assessing the safety of cycling infrastructure and identifies areas where improvements are needed. This enables policymakers and road authorities to take targeted action to improve cycling safety and reduce cyclists’ risks.
