Fast cycle route – Katwijk aan Zee

The project

The municipality of Katwijk, the municipality of Leiden and the province of Zuid-Holland are working together on a new cycle route from Leiden to Katwijk aan Zee. This connection is essential for the accessibility of Katwijk aan Zee and offers cyclists an attractive route between the coast and Leiden. An essential part of this project is the construction of a new cycle path between the Laan van Nieuw Zuid and the Cantineweg/Verlengde Westerbaan. The emphasis is on sustainability and respect for the surrounding (dune) area. Iv is responsible for the design of the cycle path and will also provide management and supervision during the implementation of the fast cycle route between Katwijk aan Zee and Leiden. This project improves the accessibility of the seaside resort and provides an attractive route for cyclists.

The challenge

A key part of the challenge was to design a cycle path that would be flexible enough to accommodate any future expansion of the Westerbaan for car traffic. In addition, the design had to fit seamlessly into the environment, especially the (dune) area, to preserve the natural experience. Iv also provided management and supervision during the implementation of the project, which involved further coordination and management aspects.

The impact

The project not only improves accessibility between Katwijk aan Zee and Leiden through a sustainable and attractive cycle route but also integrates environmentally friendly solutions such as concrete slabs and energy-efficient lighting. It respects the surrounding landscape and promotes safety through the separate paths for different users. The implementation, supported by a stakeholder participation process, ensures a broadly supported design that offers economic and environmental benefits which positively impact the community and the environment.
